About the Event :

A vibrant mineral and excavation sector is essential for technological advancement, societal growth, and national development. India and other Southeast Asian nations, rich in mineral resources, have witnessed substantial growth over recent decades. These regions employ both traditional and innovative mining methods to extract metallic, non-metallic, and energy minerals. As shallow ore bodies deplete, the industry is moving deeper into geologically complex zones, necessitating advanced excavation technologies. Such innovations not only enable access to deep-seated deposits but also ensure greater safety and efficiency while giving equal importance to the sector’s environmental responsibility. The extraction and utilization of mineral resources must align with sustainable practices that minimize ecological impact. Modern mining now emphasizes land reclamation, pollution control, and resource optimization. Environmental monitoring, eco-friendly excavation methods, and integrated waste management are becoming standard in responsible operations. As climate concerns rise, industries are also exploring carbon-neutral and energy-efficient technologies. Further, the excavation sector supports infrastructure needs, especially in densely populated or remote areas. Tunneling technologies help develop metro systems, underground utilities, and defense structures, transforming urban landscapes while minimizing surface disruption. Projects in power, transport, and defense have benefitted from these innovations, even in challenging geological conditions. Looking forward, exploration of deep-ocean and extraterrestrial resources requires newer, greener technologies. The International Symposium on Advances in Mining, Environment, and Tunneling (ISAMET-26) provides a platform for experts to deliberate on these developments. With a focus on sustainability, safety, and innovation, this event invites researchers, engineers, and industry professionals to share ideas that will shape a resilient and environmentally conscious future.

About Institution:

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, is a prestigious Institute of National Importance, established in 1960 as Visvesvaraya Regional College of Engineering (VRCE), in honor of the eminent engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya. It became an NIT under the NIT Act in 2007. Located at the heart of Nagpur-the geographical center of India-and just 7-8km from the airport and railway station, VNIT enjoys excellent connectivity and sits close to Maharashtra’s rich mineral and mining belts, offering valuable industry links and field-study opportunities in mining, geology, and environmental engineering. The sprawling 215-acre campus is recognized for its lush green environment, preserving diverse flora and fauna, and its sustainable infrastructure includes a 1MW solar power plant and a 600KLD sewage treatment plant. VNIT offers 9 UG, 27 PG, and PhD programs, supported by over 300 faculty members. The institute currently manages 93 ongoing R&D projects worth ₹60 crore. VNIT’s incubation cell, CIVN, has nurtured six startups. With over six decades of legacy, VNIT continues to excel in education, sustainability, innovation, and holistic development, cementing its status as a driving force for central India’s technological and environmental progress.

About the Department of Mining Engineering:

The Department of Mining Engineering at VNIT Nagpur, established in 1982–83, is a vibrant hub of academic excellence, industry collaboration, and cutting-edge research. Both the B.Tech program in Mining Engineering and M.Tech in Excavation Engineering are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation. The department emphasizes on hands-on experience—allocating 40% of curriculum to practical sessions—and integrates field visits, laboratory work, and dissertation projects. Housed within a modern facility, the department features well-maintained classrooms, sophisticated laboratories, workshops, seminar halls, and faculty offices. Supported by a team of nine core faculty members, along with adjunct professors and technical staff, the department delivers robust teaching and mentorship. Research serves a key pillar with several graduated and enrolled doctoral scholars working on major research areas that include geomechanics, excavation engineering, enhanced blasting, slope stability and environment control. Current R&D projects funded by TEXMIN, NCL, and MOIL Ltd., focus on initiatives like mine slope risk assessment, non-explosive detonation systems, and cyber-physical systems in mining. The department nurtures student development through active industry linkages. Substantial annual revenue is generated via consultancy services and industrial collaborations. Alumni have excelled across core mining firms, government bodies, academia, R&D units, and entrepreneurial ventures. With a mission to create internationally competitive teaching and research environments, the department continues to evolve – attracting funded projects, strengthening industry ties, and fostering innovation in sustainable mining and excavation engineering.
