About VNIT:

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, named after the eminent engineer, planner, and statesman of the country Sir M. Visvesvaraya, is one of the thirty National Institutes of Technology in the country. It has nine undergraduate, eighteen post graduate programs with a total student strength of 5000, which includes about 500 PhD scholars. A lush-green VNIT campus is sprawled over 214 acres, located centrally in the city of Nagpur, with residential facility for about 3500 students. Historically, this institute started as a Government Engineering College in 1956, got converted into Regional Engineering College in 1960 and eventually got the status of National Institute in 2002. Today, VNIT is Institute of National importance and has ascended itself from a teaching-oriented campus to a blend of research and teaching. Institute has many R&D projects funded through Government and private agencies.

About the Department:

Established in 1962, the Department of Applied Mechanics offers two post graduate programs i.e. M. Tech. in Structural Engineering and M. Tech. in Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering. The department offers structural engineering courses to B. Tech. (Civil) and B.Arch. programs along with the course of Engineering Mechanics to the first year B. Tech. students.
Department is actively involved in various R & D projects from Government, Public and Private Agencies. Department is pursuing activities related to earthquake, wind, concrete corrosion, advanced engineered materials, blast, impact and fire engineering. Department team has visited earthquake affected areas such as Bhuj, Andaman and Nepal.
Consultancy work of structural design and scrutiny of structures like water tanks, bridges, buildings, and other structures are being undertaken by the department. The department is also involved in the structural health assessment of various structures. Department has facilities for testing of materials, proof load testing, non-destructive testing, vibration measurement of structures.
